The development of Literacy skills from Prep to Year Seven has been and will remain a major focus at Central. The schools current English Program is aligned with the new syllabus and provides an overview for teachers of what needs to be taught and assessed in each Year Level. Teacher engagement with the new syllabus will be ongoing in preparation for full implementation in 2008.

The development of reading in all primary years receives an important emphasis. Strategies include:

  • Specific teaching of Reading in all Year Levels
  • The Essential Skills Program (see below)
  • Reading Recovery (for selected students)
  • The Home Reading Program focuses on the development of positive habits through daily reading from the earliest possible opportunity.
  • Ensuring a range of both school and library reading resources.
  • Intensive reading program - upper school
The Essential Skills Program is used to diagnose skills in the areas of phonics, sight words, spelling, reading and comprehension. These diagnoses form the basis for specific programs to enhance individual student learning.

Integrated units of work include a focus on genres where spelling, reading and language structures are taught in context. Students have the opportunity to compete in English Competitions (eg. University of NSW and Book Week Advertising Campaigns).
