Maryborough Central State School

Integrated Studies PDF Print
Coverage of these syllabuses across the 7 years of compulsory schooling at Maryborough Central State School is organised as follows:

Strands from SOSE, Science and HPE are clustered into set ‘Foundations’  -
  • Citizenship (SOSE Host)
  • Environment (SOSE/SCIENCE Hosts)
  • Time, Continuity and Change (SOSE Host)
  • Well Being (HPE Host)
  • Investigation (SCIENCE Host)
  • Culture (SOSE Host)
Arts and Technology Strands are clustered into ‘Satellites’ which are aligned with ‘Foundations’ as each unit/context evolves. ‘Satellites’ include -
  • Visual Arts (ARTS Host)
  • Media (ARTS/TECHNOLOGY Hosts)
  • Construction (TECHNOLOGY Host)

Each trimester (approx 12 weeks), Year Level Teams spend a half-day planning an ‘Integrated Unit’ with the Deputy Principal/Curriculum Coordinator. Each ‘Integrated Unit’ represents the curriculum intent included in one ‘Foundation’ and one ‘Satellite’.

The planning of ‘Integrated Units’ considers contexts which are based on real world issues/ situations (eg. family, home, community, global), student needs, assessment data, interests and backgrounds.  Each ‘Integrated Unit’ includes an ‘immersion’ phase and is further contextualised through the inclusion of a ‘Learning Celebration’. Units incorporate Learning Opportunities that promote recognition of difference, intellectual quality, connectedness and supportive classroom environments.

SEU Teachers and Learning Support are represented at planning meetings. They assist the group to consider appropriate adjustments to ensure that work considers inclusion of all students. Relevant individual adjustments are recorded on EAP’s and Learning Support Plans. Strategies for ‘Differentiating’ learning experiences are also identified in the unit plan.

All ‘Integrated Units’ make genuine and intentional links to Information & Communication Technologies (ICT’s), English and Mathematics.
