The school is committed to the implementation of the Maryborough Cluster Maths Program that supports the Maths syllabus. It is a sequential program in mathematics will be developed from years 1-7 that provides purposeful real life and life like activities building on previous experiences. It responds to circumstances, needs, interests and abilities of students. Students will be actively involved in discovery learning situations using concrete manipulative material such as computers and calculators and discussing their discoveries and outcomes. Competence in computational skills and the application of concepts in number, space, measurement, patterns and algebra, chance and data will be developed. To support the syllabus and the cluster based Maths program, the school has developed the Maths component of the Essential skills Program for students from 1-7. Students from years 2-7 are tested twice yearly in 2 areas of number, number facts and operations, whilst year 1 are tested at the end of their first year. This enables specific programs to be developed for students experiencing difficulties in these areas. Teachers from Central who are trained in the ‘Teacher Generated Tasks’ (TGT) Process will continue to participate in TGT Projects during 2007. Planning, implementation and sharing of these tasks is part of the intentional growing of an assessment culture at the school. Students have the opportunity to participate in International and National Maths Competitions (eg. University of NSW and Informatics). |
