Learning Support

Welcome to the Support Teacher Literacy and Numeracy (STLaN) page.  We are very fortunate at Maryborough Central State School to have support teachers for both lower (Joanne Daly) and upper (Mary-Anne Brown) school.  It is our focus to support students and teachers in providing the best possible educational experiences for all students.
Every prep child at the beginning of the year is screened in the areas of category naming, giving and following directions, comprehension, narrative, grammar awareness, rapid automatic naming, and speech articulation using the Sunscreener.  From the screener results we target the areas in which students are having difficulty and provide programs including Support-A-Talker and speech articulation, to ensure they have the best possible start.
During third term students are re-assessed using the Sunscreener to monitor their progress.
Some students will require extra assistance with speech language and speech articulation and may be referred to our visiting speech language pathologist who will provide learning support teachers, classroom teachers and parents with individual support programs.
We assess student’s reading levels through PM and Probe reading assessment schemes to determine how best to support each individual student in their reading development journey.
Small levelled reading groups focus on decoding and comprehension strategies and support classroom programs.
Extension reading programs are designed to encourage mid to high level readers to advance word knowledge, high level comprehension and foster a life-long love of reading.
Identified children participate in the First Steps in Number program.  During these sessions students complete understanding numbers, place value and counting activities.
The role of the Welfare Committee is to meet once a fortnight to discuss and decide upon the best possible social, emotional and academic outcomes for each individual child.
Our goal is for every child to experience success in their education and enjoy being a part of the Maryborough Central State School team.
